Media professional Mark Deuze on our new podcast

About journalism in the multi media world

21.10.2021  |  by Cato Verhoeven  |  Designalism

Mark Deuze is professor Mediastudies at the University of Amsterdam. He focuses on critical reflection on the interaction between media and society, especially in the field of professional media production and media use.

In this podcast, he talks about the changes that journalism has gone through and probably will go through. Starting with the rise of the digital world, Mark saw an interesting response in the journalistic world: "The first phase was a lot of shovelware. We took what we did in other media, and just shoveled it onto the digital. And I think now we are beginning to embrace the unique opportunities that digital offers to storytelling."

And that also means combining design with journalism. And there may not be so many differences between these two professions. Mark: "Their fundamental conviction about what it is that they're doing, is exactly the same. The goal of the artist -making art for art's sake- and The New York Times -all the news that's fit to print- are both basically statments towards the same ideal. I am not telling my story at the behest of someone else."

But journalists can still learn a lot from creative minds, since there is not yet a lot of room in news media for creative approaches.
